Amy Howell loves texture and layers. She is inspired by the abstract expressionists with their freedom of color, composition, and pushing the limits of possibility. She relates to their energy with today’s current events which often influence the pieces she is working on.
Amy first texturizes her canvas to give dimension to the piece, often using strips of paper, cut up photographs, glass tiles, and organic elements. She primarily applies paint with a palette knife, often mixing colors directly on the canvas. Once the basics are laid down, Amy builds on several layers, to achieve her surface.
An intuitive worker, Amy allows the piece to transform, like an evolving puzzle, inviting the viewer to personally connect to her art as if listening to music. Amy Howell lives and works in Gulfport, Florida.
